RV Internet
There are three ways to connect to the Internet while traveling in an RV; wireless pc cards, WIFI, and satellite Internet systems. They each have their own advantages and fallbacks. Wireless pc cards are usually provided by Phone Companies. The price is about 70 dollars a month and up. Startup and installation is a breeze. But the prices can be a little high for some people and you don't get coverage everywhere (only where your phone gets connection). So if you travel to remote places you may not get a connection. However, you can use wireless cards when you are in town and use the sometimes free WIFI.
WIFI stands for wireless fidelity. It is usually free but once in a while you will find some RV parks in big cities charge by the month, week, or even the day. At broadband speed you can enjoy wireless Internet from the comfort of your RV. Basically your computer just picks up the connection. You do not need a wireless pc card to get the connection but you need at least a modem either external or internal.
Satellite systems are available for about 100 dollars a month. I suggest
this if you have a desktop pc in your RV. You have to learn to aim the
antenna but once you learn you can do it in about 10 minutes. You can
set it up and break it down everyday if you like. You get the cables and
equipment sent to you. It is about 20 times faster than dial up (streaming
video available). It works in bad weather and you can mount it to the
roof of your RV if you want. But you can't use any direct TV equipment
on satellite systems unless you pay for the extra service. You can pay
more to send and receive faxes.
You don't have to be certified or anything to aim the dish but you can
pay 500 dollars to become a certified installer and aimer and make pretty
good money. However, to get started most people provide you with at least
45 days of technical support. Don't but a system without free help from
the seller as this is probably the most expensive way to connect to the
Internet.
So I recommend getting a pc card since for us it has been very reliable.
When you're at RV parks with no service you can connect with WIFI. Both
of them are totally wireless, so you can enjoy broadband Internet, in
the comfort of your RV, with no wires to wrestle with. You can also make
a lot of money on the road like I do - rv the internet.
